ABOUT
INOPIA:
?
Yes, the first Inopias were born from my pen and imagination, but soon they took on a life of their own and slipped out of my control. Since then, I’ve simply been observing what they do and noting down what I think they are plotting and representing, feeding each other in this way to grow and generate new ideas together.
Here are some of the things that I believe are connected to them.
DEEP: The Origin of the Inopias
The work DEEP is the place where the Inopias originated. Scattered throughout the composition, they curiously observe the events unfolding within it. But at one point, they began to question their own existence when they detected an element external to the flat world they inhabited—a coffee stain on the drawing.
This discovery awakened doubts beyond anything they had considered before. They began to imagine what might exist beyond the limits of the paper, and one of the Inopias never forgot that question. Slowly, with its beak, it started tearing at the edges of its reality until it opened a passage that allowed all these creatures to expand into both the real world and the imaginary one.
Inopias: Curiosity, Doubt, and Imagination
They symbolize curiosity, doubt, and imagination. Inopias are beings driven by the need to search for answers to the questions constantly suggested by both the world around them and the thoughts within themselves.
Their nature lies in exploration: observing, questioning, and interpreting what they encounter. Through their actions and adventures, they reflect the creative process itself—where uncertainty, discovery, and imagination intertwine, transforming simple observations into new meanings and possibilities.
The Way of the Inopias
There is no real or deliberate intention from the Inopias according to our understanding. These creatures simply exist. They appear while I observe the scenes they compose and reflect on their behavior, trying to draw positive insights that might help people awaken their minds or discover new perspectives.
Stimulating curiosity, empathy, and observation; bringing a smile or easing a sorrow; encouraging kindness and critical thinking among humans—these might be things the Inopias would be happy to inspire. But deep down, they simply do their own thing.
Forgetting and Curiosity
At a certain point, the Inopias forget much of what they have learned, becoming almost empty of information—hence their name. But this loss does not weaken their desire to understand the world around them. On the contrary, it renews it.
Freed from the weight of certainty, they return to observation with fresh eyes, questioning everything again. In this way, forgetting becomes part of their nature: a cycle that keeps their curiosity alive and pushes them into an endless search for new discoveries.
The Uncertain Logic of Their Bodies
They sometimes forget how their own bodies work, or even what they truly contain. They may suddenly remember they have arms when trying to pick something up from the ground, discover that their number of limbs does not necessarily have to remain four, or realize they can fly by flapping them quickly when falling from a certain height.
At other times, they pull something out from within their wool that, according to the laws of time and space, should neither fit there nor have remained hidden for so long.
Attention Guided by Impulse
Inopias allow their attention to wander wherever the whims of their subconscious guide it, surrendering their personal will to the quiet insistence of impulse. Because of this, they often become absorbed in details that might seem insignificant at first glance, sometimes overlooking what others would consider essential.
Yet through this way of observing, they begin to understand the world differently—learning to see the whole through its smallest fragments, uncovering the subtle mechanisms that quietly keep everything in motion.
Persistent Curiosity
Their search for answers can sometimes become… a little intrusive? In their eagerness to understand, these creatures can be quite persistent in their investigations, occasionally encroaching on personal (or animal) space or causing mild discomfort. Yet their intentions are always good—they aim to help, remaining friendly, spreading positive vibes, and trying during each interaction to create a space of familiarity, respect, and joy.
Mindful Wanderers
They exist in a strange state of active passivity, beings aware of what happens around them, yet guided by whimsical randomness. They focus on what captures their attention, often overlooking what might seem “more important,” gathering information that may appear trivial but from which they extract surprisingly enriching insights.
Their minds stay alert, taking alternative paths and enjoying the journey far more than reaching the destination, which they have likely already forgotten.
Questioning Reality
Without intending to do so directly, they seek to escape the routines that can dull the senses and train the brain to follow them unquestioningly. They wonder whether what they have perceived is all there is and instinctively probe beneath the first layers of reality, questioning whether the information received from the world is complete or if habitual processes of perception may have overlooked something.
Adaptive Observation
They often study attentively the creatures they encounter. Some simply continue on their way, but other Inopias, in order to understand, may even alter their own forms in unexpected ways, taking inspiration from what they observe. They can change their bodies to resemble octopuses, crabs, monkeys, cats… developing new and different limbs, modifying the density, texture, and hardness of their skin and wool, or even forming colonies where each individual takes on a new role to literally experience the creature and the actions it performs.
Unbreakable Curiosity
They are strangely resilient, so much so that no Inopia has ever been seen to perish or even suffer real physical harm. This allows them to fully surrender to their intrusive thoughts, exploring questions like: What’s inside an active volcano? How sharp are a shark’s teeth? Could I reach the Moon without specialized equipment? Once an idea crosses their minds, few stop to consider whether it’s wise.
Mysterious Reproduction
It is still unclear exactly how Inopias reproduce. Some have been observed sprouting from the wool of other Inopias, while others, during meditation, materialize thought-clouds that take the form of new Inopias, coming to life and becoming independent. Some even draw additional Inopias directly, which gradually detach from the surface to begin wandering without any set direction or purpose. More information will be provided as it becomes available.
Individual Differences
There are some inconsistencies in the descriptions of these creatures, for instance, their total surrender to impulse versus the careful contemplation of a scene before acting, or the questioning of what is perceived versus simply being the tip of a crab’s leg. This, however, is because each Inopia can differ greatly from the others in personality, mindset, and form.
